Opinion Piece

Before we dive in, I want to acknowledge my perspective: I am proudly pro-sex worker. In my work as a somatic sex coach, I view sex work as a valid profession. In my opinion, there shouldn’t be shame carried by sex workers or by the clients who see them. When we strip away the societal stigma that unfairly persists, we can view sex work sessions for what they can be: A supportive space to explore connection, new sensation, and a way to express yourself.

If you are reading this and find yourself in a similar situation, I invite you to pause and take a deep breath. On your exhale, let go of any judgment you are holding against yourself. The desire you are experiencing may be a way of your nervous system protecting you.

Often, hiring a sex worker isn’t just about the physical act of sex. It is often your body craving safety, predictability and clarity. Here are 3 reasons why booking an appointment with a sex worker can feel more desirable than dating or casual hook-ups:

  1. The Safety of the Transaction & Protection of Autonomy

The current landscape of dating and casual hook-ups can feel like an emotional minefield. There are unspoken expectations, fears of rejection, and pressures to perform. Your brain is constantly trying to guess: Do they like me? Am I doing this right? What do they expect next?

When you hire a sex worker, these worries can disappear because everything is clearly defined by a financial transaction. The boundaries, time frames, and financial expectations are outwardly agreed upon up front. This agreement allows your mind to rest because it takes the pressure off having to wander, “where is this going”, “do they like me”, etc., which means you can be in the present moment more relaxed.

For anyone who leans toward an avoidant attachment style, organic dating can also feel like an implicit threat to your independence. A transactional container provides a clear boundary where you don't have to worry about losing your sense of self, compromising your autonomy, or being consumed by someone else's emotional needs.

A space for Connection, Exploration, and Novelty

Traditional dating or casual hookups often create stress when it comes to bringing up your truest desires, so people find themselves filtering out these parts to seem more desirable to their sexual partner. This often looks like worrying about being judged, misunderstood, or rejected by a partner. Booking an appointment with a sex worker provides an environment for these pressures to be stripped away.

Within a dynamic with a sex worker, your body may experience three elements:

  1. Connection. Because of the transactional nature of sex work, there is no need to lie. This means you don’t have to perform or pretend to be anyone else; you can experience being seen and accepted for your desires as they are.

  2. Exploration. It offers a non-judgmental space to voice fantasies, communicate boundaries, and learn what actually feels pleasurable to your body with someone else.

  3. Novelty: Stepping out of your normal sexual routine with a professional creates a novel experience, and desire thrives on variety.

The Allure of the Taboo

From a young age, we are conditioned with societal ideas of what a “normal” relationship looks like. When an experience sits outside of those conventional rules, the element of the unknown heightens all your senses.

Your nervous system responds to this unpredictability, novelty, and taboo anticipation with a surge of dopamine and adrenaline. This chemical cocktail acts as a natural accelerator for arousal: sharpening your physical focus and turning uncertainty into heightened turn-on that routine organic dating often struggles to match.

Bridging the Gap: From Transactional Safety to Organic Connection

If seeing a sex worker offers you a sense of safety and clarity, you are not broken.

However, if relying solely on transactional spaces leaves you feeling isolated long-term, or if you notice a gap between the intimacy you buy and the organic relationships you want to build, it helps to look at how your body handles relational stress.

If you notice an avoidant pattern in your dating life, pulling away is often a self-protective mechanism to keep from feeling swallowed up by connection.

In everyday dating, low-pressure boundary setting and nervous system regulation look like:

  • Noticing when your chest tightens, or your breath shortens during dates, and knowing how to ground your body to feel more comfortable

  • Communicating what you want clearly up front, rather than waiting for the other person to set the rules

  • Learning to tolerate the slight uncertainty of organic connection without your body treating it as a threat

A Note on Your Desires

To the person who wrote in: You’re not broken. You have found a path to having intimacy that feels easy and comfortable. It would be interesting to explore whether you want to change this path.

If you want to use this as an invitation to look a little closer at what you are experiencing, reflect on what you are craving in those spaces. Is it the introduced variety, the safety of knowing what to expect or something else? Once you understand why seeing a sex worker feels safer for you, you can then look at how to bring that same clarity and low-pressure boundary setting into your daily life and relationships, too.
